Person detained after social media threats toward Horn Lake High School

HORN LAKE, MS (WMC) - Horn Lake Police Department took a child into custody over social media threats toward Horn Lake High School.

The threat, a Snapchat picture, surfaced Monday.

The photo showed a gun pointed towards the school. A separate photo of someone holding a large gun was also shared.

Officers later determined that the images were old, but were able to track down the child responsible for it.

He or she was taken into custody early Monday morning and charged with obscene electronic communications and violation of probation through youth court.

That person is in custody at DeSoto County Juvenile Detemtion Center.

DeSoto County Schools increased police presence in light of the threat.

In an email to parents, Horn Lake High School principal, Andy Orr, said police were notified of the threats.

Dear Parents: Our Horn Lake High School administrators contacted local law enforcement officials last night concerning a threatening social media post that had been shared via Snapchat. The Horn Lake Police Department and the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department worked with me and district officials during the overnight hours to ensure the safety of students and staff. Because all matters regarding he safety of our students are treated with the utmost importance, there will be an increased police presence on campus today.
