Father surrenders after Amber Alert; child safe

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A baby is safe after spending hours unaccounted for during a statewide search.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued an Amber Alert for 3-week-old Steven Smith, who was taken by his father Stevie Boyd, who does not have custody of the child.

The baby boy was taken from his Memphis home on Graceland Avenue at Pepper Tree Apartments on Tuesday night around 10 p.m. Police said Boyd fired shots at the mother after he took the child.

Boyd surrendered to police sometime after 11 a.m., and police found the child unharmed.

Police say the boy appeared unharmed but was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital out of precaution.

Boyd is charged with two counts of aggregated assault and especially aggravated kidnapping.

“He went into the home unannounced, forced his way into a bedroom, took the child and left,” said Lieutenant Karen Rudolph. “The mother was attempting to stop him from leaving with the child and that’s whenever he was firing shots.”

No one inside the apartment was hit by the gunfire, according to police.

During investigators’ search of the complex Tuesday night, they learned Boyd was hiding in another apartment.

MPD’s TACT team and negotiators were called in to help with the peaceful release of the child.
