AL man on journey to help homeless spreads goodwill to Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The Alabama man famous for mowing 50 lawns in 50 states is now hitting the road for the holidays to help the homeless.

Monday night, he stopped in Memphis.

Rodney Smith Jr., dressed as Santa Claus, gifted a gentleman named Lee a blanket, sleeping bag, tent and backpack full of hygiene items.

Smith started his journey Monday in Mobile. He stopped in New Orleans, Louisiana and Jackson, Mississippi.

Tennessee was his fourth state of the day.

“Because last Christmas when I done it, a lot of the people that I gave gifts to, I mean, their faces lit up like little kids on Christmas,” Smith said. “And it meant so much to them. So, to do it again, in all 50 states, means a lot, lets me know I’m making a difference.”

During the summer months, Smith visited all 50 states providing free lawn care for the elderly, disabled, single moms and veterans.

His next stops on the holiday tour Tuesday include Little Rock and Oklahoma City.
