Participating in ‘Secret Sister’ gift exchange could lead to criminal charges

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The ‘Secret Sister’ gift exchange is making its round on Facebook again this year, and the Better Business Bureau is sending a warning to the public.

The gift exchange is a pyramid scheme that promises participants will get 36 gifts in return for buying just one by recruiting others to participate.

The U.S. Postal Service says that participants in the gift exchange could be subject to penalties for mail fraud and illegal gambling.

The bureau also warns against the exchange because it puts personal information at risk by requiring users to disclose personal information like a home address.
