Literacy and career night at Promise Academy promotes family engagement
Promise Academy held its first ever Literacy and Career night to get parents engaged with their students' education.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Encouraging parents and students to read and set goals together was the mission of the inaugural Literacy and Career Night Wednesday at Promise Academy-Spring Hill.

The school is off Frayser-Raleigh Road. The event was an effort to introduce students to various career paths while fostering family engagement.

The theme: “Dream Big.”

The program began with a guest reader, WMC Action News 5’s Jerica Phillips, followed by an activity that challenged students to consider a number of career options.

Several community members attended career fields in journalism, law enforcement, technology and banking.

“It’s our first ever Literacy and Career Night and we are grateful to have so many families attend,” said school social worker Ja’Neair Johnson. “We hope to increase family participation at future programs.”

Students later divided into small groups to discuss literature and career development.

A Scholastic Book Fair culminated the evening of activities.
