CORDOVA, TN (WMC) - Police say a Cordova man accidentally shot through the floor of his upstairs apartment. Now he’s facing charges.

Officers responded to to the complex around 10 p.m. Tuesday where Carlton Hamilton said he retrieved his .40 caliber from a backpack in the living room before clearing the weapon in his bedroom. He dropped out the magazine, locked back the slide, cleared the chamber and pulled the trigger to un-cock the firearm, which discharged to his surprise.

Hamilton’s girlfriend told police she was in bed when he came into the room with the gun. She watched him clear his weapon like he does most nights before bed. She said she heard a bang, then saw a bullet hole on the floor.

Police made contact with Hamilton’s downstairs neighbor who said she was watching TV in her bedroom when she heard a loud noise and saw something come through the ceiling. She said there was a small hole in the ceiling and a bullet on the bedroom floor.

The woman called 911 and apartment security to report the incident.

No one was injured.

Hamilton was taken in for questing. He’s now charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.
