MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The Memphis Tigers football team is going bowling for a fifth straight season.
Sunday, officials announced they would be facing off against Wake Forest in the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 22.
Kickoff is 11a.m. at Legion Field, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
This will be the fifth match-up between Memphis and Wake Forest, but the first since 1967.
The overall series is tied at 2-2 with Memphis winning 42-10 in the last meeting in 1967.
The Tigers returned home late Saturday night after battling unbeaten and #8 ranked UCF in the American Conference Title game in Orlando.
Memphis led for much of the game, 3 times by 17 points, before the Knights took control in the fourth quarter and won 56-41.
Wake Forest will meet Memphis coming off a season ending 59-7 win over archrival Duke.
Tigers Head Football Coach Mike Norvell had this to say about the matchup.
"We are extremely excited for the opportunity to go back to Birmingham to an outstanding bowl against an impressive opponent who finished the season playing really well, in Wake Forest,” Norvell said. “This bowl provides our fans with an amazing opportunity to come down and be part of a unique experience as we play in our fifth-straight bowl game for the first time in program history. I have the utmost respect for Coach Dave Clawson and I know it will be a phenomenal game. We look forward to competing for our ninth win and a chance to send our 2018 senior class out this opportunity."
The Tigers will take the rest of this week off before returning to bowl practice Friday.
They’ll head to Birmingham for on-site bowl practices on December 18.
