Memphis Hoopfest features nation’s top prospects

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The Memphis Hoopfest, in partnership with the ARS Rescue Rooter National Hoopfest, tips off on Friday with games at Olive Branch High School and Briarcrest Christian School.

The event formerly known as the “Penny Hoopfest” features some of the biggest names in high school basketball, including East High School center and University of Memphis signee James Wiseman, and Holy Spirit (GA) shooting guard Anthony Edwards. Both prospects are ranked top four in the class of 2019, and will play each other on Friday when East faces Holy Spirit.

“It’s great. Two big time players going head to head," Edwards said about facing Wiseman. “It’s in his city, so, who knows. It’s going to be fun though.”

“It’s going to be a great matchup,” Wiseman said. “I just love prepping for games like this, because it’s going to be a fun game.”

Edwards is the highest ranked shooting guard in the class of 2019, and plans to make his college announcement in February. Edwards told 24/7 Sports in December his top five finalists are Georgia, Florida State, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina, but told WMC Action News 5 on Friday that Memphis is still in the running for his services.

“I still like Memphis a lot,” Edwards said. They’re not out of the picture."

“For them to have three NBA coaches is big to me. I like Penny (Hardaway) a lot. He texts me every once in a while showing me he’s watching film, and breaking down my film.”

Tigers head coach Penny Hardaway isn’t the only one recruiting Edwards to Memphis, Wiseman said he’s trying to sway Edwards to the 901 too.

“I still talk to him," Wiseman said. “He and Trendon Watford a lot. I’m trying to create a super team, so hopefully we can make that happen."
