MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Penny Hardaway’s conference coaching debut came Thursday night as Memphis hosted Wichita State at FedExForum.
The Wichita State Shockers and Head Coach Gregg Marshall gave Hardaway’s squad its first test of league play, where these games will definitely factor into any post season appearances at the end of the year.
Freshman Alex Lomax, who originally signed with Wichita State out of East High made his presence known early, coming up with steals, Assists, and floaters.
At just 5′10″, he lead the Tigers in rebounds with 8, and produced 8 points and 5 assists.
The Tigers defense was strong all night, forcing 15 turnovers, many leading to easy fast break buckets.
The U of M went up 12 at the half, 44-32, and got continued strong play from Freshman Antwann Jones with 16 points.
Senior Kyvon Davenport came off the bench to lead all scorers with 25 points in 26 minutes.
Tigers get the victory in their first AAC game, 85-74.
Memphis is now 1-0 in league play and 9-5 overall. Next they’ll get what could be their toughest test of the season on the road Saturday at 17th-ranked Houston. Tip time is 5 p.m.
