Family’s beloved Bible stolen during Memphis stay

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A couple is desperate to find a precious family Bible stolen while visiting Memphis.

Kaye Cillessen and her husband were staying downtown when a thief got away with their priceless possession.

“My only hope is that whoever took this would open up and read it,” Kaye said. “Open it up and read it.”

They were driving from Kansas to visit their daughter in Florida when they stopped in Memphis.

When they woke up Monday morning, the couple found out they were victims of a crime.

"They got clothes from us, but in the suitcase I did have a Bible packed in there and it was a study Bible that I used for a good number of years,” Kaye said.

Memphis police said the theft happened Sunday night at La Quinta Inn on Union Avenue.

Investigators said someone busted the car's window and took off with Kaye's black suitcase.

While Kaye said the suitcase itself doesn't matter, it's what was inside the Bible that matters – notes and pictures of her parents.

"I think that's probably the thing that bothers me the most having lost that because I just cherish the pictures and the fact I had written so much in that Bible,” Kaye said.

Kaye and her husband are back on the road to Florida.

While Memphis police continue to search for the person behind the robbery, Kaye has this message for the robber.

"Read it and maybe they would have a change of heart and a mind change, who knows,” Kaye said.

If you have any information that could help police catch the person who broke into the couple’s car, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
