Mayor Harris seeking $1.3M to transform juvenile justice system

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris is looking to reform the county’s juvenile justice system.

Harris will ask the county commission for $1.3 million as part of a discussion for a proposed $25 million Juvenile Justice and Education Center.

Harris said the best way we can make sure we can cut down on repeat offenses is to make an investment.

"These kids will be in our community for the rest of our lives and let's put them on the road to rehabilitation," Harris said. "This is the right thing to do, these are our kids in our community and they need help."

The facility would include classrooms, recreation space and access for social service operators to come in and deliver services for kids.
