MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Police say a man was shot to death while trying to sell a pair of tennis shoes.

On Jan. 5, police responded to Arbor apartments near Ridgeway and Knight Arnold Roads where Matthew Taylor was dead in the driver’s seat of a car. He had multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say a woman who was in the passenger seat at the time of the shooting said they meeting someone named “Tay” who wanted to buy a pair of tennis shoes Taylor had listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

According to a police affidavit, “Tay” picked the location. While Taylor showed “Tay” the shoes, “Tay” pulled a gun and ordered Taylor to hand over his own, which was holstered and stuck between the driver’s seat and center console of the car.

The witness told police “Tay” opened fire, grabbed Taylor’s gun and ran through the complex. She later picked “Tay” out of a photo lineup.

Police identified “Tay” as Montavious Farmer and linked him to the Facebook Messenger that exchanged messages with Taylor. When police too Farmer into custody, he had a cellphone with him that matched the number used to contact Taylor about the shoes.

Farmer was arrested for first-degree murder during a robbery, especially aggravated robbery and reckless endangerment.
