MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Thursday marks day two of the city of Memphis’s tire redemption program.
City and county leaders said more than 20,000 tires were collected on the first day and they will continue until the funds run out.
The program will start back up at 8 a.m. at Refurban at 1029 Florida Street, paying $1 for each tire brought in to recycle.
There's still about $40,000 left to buy tires.
The program works to fight blight. Residents bring in old tires and get paid up to $250.
Some participants were disappointed to learn they wouldn't get paid right away.
Instead, the program issues checks that arrive in 2-4 weeks.
To participate, you must bring a valid Tennessee driver's license or ID and have a Tennessee license plate.
The program will run until 3 p.m. If funds are left, the city may do another round Friday.
