MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A 23-year-old man is facing a sex trafficking charge after police say a woman reported him for making her go on sex dates and keeping the money for himself.
According to a police affidavit, a woman contacted police Jan. 10 saying she was a sex trafficking victim and she was trying to escape her pimp. The woman told officers she was recruited in November 2018 by Jamarius Marques Strickland and another prostitute. They promised to protect her and give her food and clothing if she worked as a prostitute and turned over the money.
She said Strickland posted ads on online dating websites and when they went unanswered he made her walk on Lamar soliciting customers. When she didn’t follow his instructions, she told police Strickland became violent and threatened her.
According to the report, the woman went to police Jan. 5 after he physically assaulted her when she returned from a date without the correct amount of money. He picked her up after she spoke with police and forced her to keep working as a prostitute.
The woman said Strickland took her cellphone and wouldn’t let her call anyone.
Strickland was booked into the Shelby County Jail on $125,000 bond.
