JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A local Foodie group in Jackson has started a gift card drive for furloughed federal employees in the metro.

According to organizer, Carlyn Hicks, there are at least 45 federal employees and counting who have signed up to receive donations.

Hicks stated, “One thing we do well in this city (and our state) is food. Another thing we do well is community. When the two come together, we see great things happen. This is one of those things. We take care of each other, that’s the Mississippi way. Our neighbors impacted by the government shutdown are hurting, and we hope this gesture can help alleviate some of the burden and give them a sense of normalcy."

If you want to donate to this drive, please stop by an area restaurant or grocery store and purchase a gift card to donate. You can then drop off your gift card in the drop boxes located at Sal & Mookies, Broad Street Bakery, or Bravo.

Local restaurants have been stepping up to donate gift cards as well. Aplos, Manship, Outback Steakhouse, and Pho Huong are all making donations to this drive.

"The response has been overwhelming from those individuals and families impacted. By 11:30 we have 45 persons and their families who have signed up for gift card assistance. We need the help of the community at large to help us answer that call.”

If any other restaurants or businesses would like to make a donation, they can contact Carlyn Hicks at jacksonfoodies@gmail.com.

Distribution of the gift cards will begin on Monday, January 28.
