MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, numerous events were held across the Mid-South.
With the observance in mind, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland hosted the 2019 Luminary Awards.
The ceremony celebrated people of brilliant achievement who Inspire others and bring light to those around them.
This year, the Luminary Awards honored 10 women for their contributions to the Memphis community.
“When I first moved the Memphis, I wanted to know who these women were,” said recipient Regina Walker. “I heard about them and at any time I found out they were going to be some place, I would figure out a way to get to where they are. Someone once said that Memphis is very singly rich with opportunities, these women discovered that and helping other people to see what those opportunities are.”
Walker served as an executive and the senior vice president of community engagement and alignment with The United Way of the Mid-South for 29 years.
