Shelby Co. Commission approves funds for new juvenile center, Union Row parking

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - It was a big night for Shelby County Commission, who approved major spending plans on two proposals that have been in the news.

Commissioners approved $1.3 million to spend on architecture and design plans for a new Juvenile Court.

Replacing the facility has been a major priority for County Mayor Lee Harris.

Right now the project is being called the "Youth Justice and Education Center," but the official title hasn't been decided.

Leaders also approved the $50 million public financing offer to build a parking garage for the new Union Row development.

City Council signed off on the plan last week.

The cash would be loaned to build a 2,000 spot garage to serve the apartments, office space and hotel proposed for the site.
