MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - President Trump has invited Alice Johnson to Tuesday’s State of the Union Address.
Johnson was granted clemency by the president in June 2018 after pleas from reality star Kim Kardashian-West.
Johnson was convicted in 1996 on eight criminal counts related to a Memphis-based cocaine trafficking operation involving more than a dozen people.
The 63-year-old grandmother served 21 years of her life sentence for the charges. It was her first offense.
The White House highlights Johnson’s dedication to “helping those who are in a similar position as she was and giving a voice to the criminal justice reform movement” as one of many reasons for her invitation.
Johnson is one of 13 of the president’s special guests.
The State of the Union address will air on WMC Action News 5 tonight at 8 p.m. You can also watch the live stream at this link.
