MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The TBI is investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting at Garden Tree Hotel in Memphis, near the intersection of I-40 and Sycamore View Road.
Preliminary information from the TBI states the shooting happened around 3:35 p.m. in the hotel parking lot.
Deputies from SCSO Narcotics Unit were attempting to serve an outstanding arrest warrant on the wanted male suspect.
When the suspect saw the deputies approaching in the parking lot, he reportedly fired upon them.
At least two deputies returned fire, striking the man, who died at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
“When deputies recognized the individual, there was an exchange of gunfire between this deputy and the wanted party," said SCSO Lieutenant Anthony Buckner. “Again he was fatally wounded. What I can say is this incident occurred outside the hotel. It does not appear any guests of the hotel were affected by this incident.”
SCSO confirms the 6100 block of Shelby Oaks is blocked off in both directions at this time. If you’re driving in the area, you’ll want to take an alternate route.
Per TBI policy, the deputies’ identities are not being released at this time.
The suspect’s identity has also not been released.
"I just looked up and they were shooting,” said one witness, who didn’t want to be identified. "I pulled up to get something to eat, heard the shots go off, I looked to the left. They were standing over dude. I guess they shot him. I heard about 10 different shots.”
Memphis Fire Department officials declared the man deceased on the scene.
TBI officials have taken the lead in this investigation, which is typical protocol whenever someone dies at the hands of a deputy or officer.
The deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave.
This is an ongoing investigation. We will update this story as more details become available.
