MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The Memphis Tiger basketball team is trying to build some momentum heading into the American Athletic Conference tournament, which they host next month at FedExForum.
They are also trying to develop their young talent for the program’s future.
Head coach Penny Hardaway put freshman point guard Alex Lomax in the game early at East Carolina Wednesday night, and it paid dividends.
Lomax finished with 7 points, 6 assists, and only one turnover in the Tigers’ 79-69 win.
“I’ve coached him since sixth grade I know what he can do, and he just has to relax.” Hardaway said. “I said, ‘man you’re gonna win basketball games for us. Don’t worry about what everybody else says. and don’t put that undue pressure on yourself.’ When you start doing that, and start looking at every social media site, and seeing what people are saying about you is not good. Especially, for a young kid’s mind. You just have to go out there and do what you’ve always done, and he looked like himself last night.”
The Tigers now 15-10, 7-5 in the AAC stay on the road at UCF on Saturday. Tip off is at 5 p.m.
