MPD officer stabbed in Horn Lake road rage incident

HORN LAKE, MS (WMC) - Horn Lake Police Department it is investigating a road rage shooting at the intersection of Goodman Road and Horn Lake Road.

Officials confirm one person was killed in a shooting, and one person was hospitalized after being stabbed.

Horn Lake officials said one of the victims was fatally shot after stabbing the other victim, who Memphis Police Department identified as one of their officers.

The officer was off-duty at the time, and their identity is not being released.

Tuesday night in Horn Lake in the middle of rush hour, the Walgreens at Horn Lake and Goodman Roads was surrounded by crime scene tape.

“One male approached the other,” said Horn Lake Police Captain Joseph Keene. “He pulled out a knife and stabbed the male around the neck area. Upon getting struck by the blade, the second male pulled out a hand gun and shot the other male.”

Investigators say the drivers had an altercation at Goodman and Hurt pulled into the Walgreens a few blocks away.

Horn Lake officials said one driver, later revealed as the off-duty MPD officer, pulled into the parking lot at Walgreens and went to the Redbox outside.

The second driver followed him, officials said, and confronted him about a road rage incident before stabbing the off-duty officer in the neck.

Horn Lake officials said the off-duty officer then pulled out his gun and shot the other driver in the chest.

The driver who was shot died at the scene.

"I think this is horrible,” said DeSoto County resident Arkirya Davis.

Passersby were shocked by all the blue lights and by the senselessness.

“Whoever lost their life, RIP,” Davis said. “I don’t know what happened, but road rage shouldn’t take it that far."

"In a situation like this where somebody is pronounced deceased, it’s a difficult situation for all involved,” Capt. Davis said.

Memphis police said the off-duty officer is in critical but stable condition.
