MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - There aren’t many times where fans get excited about their team after a loss, but there’s a buzz around the Memphis Express with the announcement of Zach Mettenberger as starting quarterback.
Mettenberger, who played college ball at LSU and started 10 games with the Tennessee Titans in the NFL, came off the bench in the second half at Orlando and proceeded to throw a touchdown pass on his first drive in the third quarter.
He threw another late in the 4th...the first 2 TD passes of the season for the Express.
They had thrown none with Christian Hackenberg as starter in 2 and half games. Hack did have 3 interceptions.
Mettenberger finished 9-12 for 140 yards, 2 scores and no picks, plus a 2 point conversion in the 21-17 loss to the Alliance of American Football’s top team, the 3-0 Orlando Apollos.
The Express will host the San Diego Fleet Saturday with a new start time, 3 p.m. at the Liberty Bowl.
