OXFORD, MS (WMC-TV) - It has become a yearly tradition on the Ole Miss campus and Saturday, roughly 4,000 Rebel football fans gathered to celebrate the start of what they hope will be a winning football season at the annual Meet the Rebels day.

"It's so good to see our fans here today," said Head Coach Houston Nutt.  "Lots of numbers, lots of children dressed in red and blue and there's nothing like it.  You know it's getting close when you have Rebel day."

Nutt said the fan support for the team last year was overwhelming.

For longtime fans and those just starting out, Saturday was all about being up close and personal with their beloved team.

"It makes you feel connected to the team," said Ole Miss fan Tim Henry.  "You get to know the players, coaches.  I've got autographs from way back and as you get older, you reflect back on the fun I had as a fan."

Before the players went through a late day scrimmage, they had the chance to meet fans, take pictures and sign autographs.

Helen Carraway has been a fan all of her life.  She said there is simply no place on earth like Ole Miss.

"It's nowhere else in this country where you can go together as a fan base and tailgate in the Grove and walk to the ballgame," Carraway said.  "It's just a unique place to be."

Ole Miss plays their first game at home on September 4 against Jacksonville State.  The team expects a sell out crowd.
