MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two women had to be rushed to the hospital Wednesday after an explosion sent their home up in flames.

Tori Murrell said it was tough watching her neighbors' home catch fire.

"The fire was a tragic loss for the family," said Murrell. "It's heartbreaking to see an elderly family lose their home."

The fire broke out just before 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning in the 3200 block of Scenic Terrace.

"When I heard the explosion, I looked out and saw the fire," Murrell. "I hit the alarm on my house. And when they called me, I told them it was the house across the street."

The man who lived inside the home was able to make it out before Memphis Firefighters arrived.

"He went and turned the dryer on and sat down for his coffee," said Murrell. "Next thing you know, he heard a loud explosion. Next thing you know, he said he saw fire. Then he saw me."

The man's wife and mother-in-law were both trapped in a back bedroom and had to be rescued.

"We could not get them out," said Murrell. "I could help Mr. Ernest out because he was trying to get out the front window. I took a stick and bust the window out to provide a way for him to get out."

Both women were transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation and burns.

"Both the individuals were in full arrest," said Lt. Wayne Cook with the Memphis Fire Department. "The 70-year-old female, we were able to get a pulse prior to arrival to the hospital, but both were in full arrest."

Meanwhile, investigators spent Wednesday trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
