(WMC) - Shelby County Commissioner Henri Brooks made a very brief court appearance before a general sessions judge on Friday morning.

Her next court date is set for July.

Commissioner Brooks is usually never at a loss for words, but she said nothing as she walked into court to face a simple assault charge.

"In terms of whether a crime was committed, I don't see it. I don't see that a crime was committed," says Brooks' attorney Andre Wharton.

In court, Judge Bill Anderson recused himself because the county commission provides funding for the court.

After her brief appearance, Commissioner Brooks waved at constituents as she walked to her car.

Earlier this week, multiple witnesses told police that Brooks used racial slurs during an argument over a parking space.

Brooks allegedly snatched a phone from a woman who attempted to take her picture before dumping water on her.

Cell phone video captured the resulting conversation.

"And then she got onto me she goes, do you think you're white or something. And my jaw just dropped because I'm mixed. Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? Why are you turning this into a racial issue?" said the woman.

Brooks' lawyer wants to make sure the entire tape is understood in context.

"You can determine some things from the tapes in favor of Commissioner Brooks," said Andre Wharton.

Brooks will appear in court again July 29, after a special judge is appointed.
