TBI investigates deadly shooting in Ripley, TN

The TBI is investigating a deadly shooting involving police officers in Ripley, Tennessee.

It happened just before midnight Friday during a traffic stop.

Ceasear Cooper had just left a friend's house when witnesses say Ripley Police stopped his car at a roadblock and then shot him.

TBI says he refused to cooperate during a seatbelt check.

Ripley Police tell the TBI Cooper put his car in reverse to avoid the check, and then tried to run over officers.

Witnesses say police fired 10 rounds into the car, 4 of them hitting Cooper. He was airlifted to the MED where he died.

Now, Cooper's family wants answers.

"Witnesses say from off of Gate Street, there was no reason. They just did it because they felt like they could. It wasn't right, and I want justice done because my brother is dead," says Tina Cooper. "They shot him down really for no reason and I feel like it was a setup. I really do," adds Cooper.

Ralph Adkins says Cooper had just left his house when Ripley Police stopped his car at a roadblock and shot him.

"This is just, I can't understand it. He wasn't doing nothing," says Adkin.

Two Ripley Police officers, Andrew Criner and Bill Bennett, have been suspended with pay.

And, Ripley Police add, the car Cooper was driving was stolen.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations worked the scene until three this morning. They have not issued a report yet.

But as for Cooper's family, they'll have to wait for more answers.
