A Shelby County couple involved in a domestic violence case appeared in court Monday morning, both entering pleas.

The bruises were still visible on Shannon Hanks' face.

According to an arrest ticket, Hanks claimed her live-in boyfriend, Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Pretti, grabbed her by the throat during an argument, threw her to the ground, and later threw a phone at her.

Hanks was in court because she is also a suspect in the case.  Pretti, who works with the Sheriff's Narcotics Unit, claimed she scratched him and attempted to choke him.

"There were a lot of troubles in the house," said sheriff's department spokesperson Steve Shular. "We have a lot of sorting out to do."

According to court documents, the couple had been fighting on and off for at least two weeks.

Things turned violent Friday night, when the couple argued over a candy bracelet Hanks found inside Pretti's truck.

Monday, Hanks and Pretti both pleaded not guilty to domestic assault charges.  Shular said Pretti was put on leave with pay pending a department investigation.  "It's going to be investigated not only by the investigating officer but by our Bureau of Professional Standards and Integrity," he said.  "Obviously law enforcement officers are held to a higher standard."

This is not the first time the Sheriff's Department disciplined Deputy Pretti:

**In September 2006, Pretti was suspended for eight days due to an incident at Flashback's Bar and Grill.

**According to his personnel file, the bar's security guard says Pretti jumped him.

**The department found Pretti violated Shelby County Sheriff's Office procedures, saying he acted in an inappropriate manner.

Neither Hanks nor Pretti commented after court.  They are scheduled to appear again in May.
