MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Former Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis point guard Antonio Burks remains in critical condition a day after being shot during a robbery.

Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Katina Gerrard said at midmorning on Tuesday there was no change in the medical condition of Burks, who underwent surgery Monday night after he was shot in the lower torso.

Anthony Jefferson, who drove Burks to the hospital, said the former basketball star came up to him bleeding badly with a gunshot wound.

"I was at my truck and heard a gunshot, saw a man running up the street, asked could I run him to the hospital," Jefferson said.

He didn't hesitate, driving Burks to The MED as fast as he safely could.

"He was telling me to go through lights," Jefferson said. "I said, 'Both of us don't need to be at the hospital!'"

Jefferson called 911 on the way. He said Burks managed to stay conscious the whole time.

"He said if he don't make it, tell his family no to cry for him," Jefferson said. "Looked like he was going to pass out."

Police said three gunmen approached six people in a backyard on LaClede Avenue in an attempted robbery. They shot Burks, who Jefferson said was visiting family, along with a 44-year-old man.

The three gunmen got away.

Jefferson didn't even know that the man he hopefully helped save was a basketball star.

"Police officer told me after I got back, about 12 minutes later," he said. "I'd do it for anyone."

Police say at this time they believe the robbery was random and Burks was not targeted.
