MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A skateboarder was killed in Midtown early Monday morning after colliding with a trash truck.

According to Memphis police, officers were called to the intersection of Courtland Place and South Cooper Street just after 2:00 a.m. Monday.  There, witnesses said, two men on skateboards turned onto Courtland at the same time as a trash truck belonging to Allied Waste Management.

One of the skateboarders became pinned under the truck and was dragged several feet before the driver realized something was wrong.

Residents of the neighborhood were shocked by the accident.

"How do you drag somebody that far screaming?" witness Michael Augustin asked. "Isn't their friend going to be waving their hands or something?"

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Allied Waste Management spokesperson Clay Cox released a statement saying, "We were notified at two this morning one of our regular drivers was servicing customers when a skateboarder came into contact with his truck.  Our driver was not injured.  Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.  There is a pending investigation."

Police are still investigating the incident, and have not yet said if any charges will be filed.
