Homicide Detectives working on unsolved murders in Memphis

One hundred-fifty-eight-people have been murdered in the city of Memphis this year alone.

Homicide Detectives have already solved more than 80-percent of the cases, and are now working on the unsolved murders.

Just over thirty of those remain unsolved, which puts our solve rate about 25-percent higher than the average for other cities our size.

It's been eight months since Cora Lee Gatewood was murdered inside her home.

Neighbor, Herman Maclin still thinks about her every day.

"I couldn't believe it because she never did bother nobody, she walked and picked up kids and everything. I couldn't believe nobody would kill that old lady," says Maclin.

Gatewood's killer is still on the loose. Her case is one of about 30 murder cases in Memphis this year which remain unsolved.

"Eighty-percent of those cases have been solved or cleared," says Lt. Joe Scott of the Memphis Police Department.

The national average for cleared murder cases is just over 62-percent.

For cities the same size as Memphis, the average rate is even lower at about 54-percent.

Maclin tells Action News 5 that the people who live in his neighborhood are more cautious now and worry about the killer who is still on the loose.

Macklin says, "I think they should hurry up and catch whoever did that."

Police say a murder case is always open.

Lt. Scott says investigators are working a case right now that happened in 1993.
