Teen dies in early morning car crash

Family members are grieving over the death of a 19-year old boy. In the early morning hours, Shelby County Deputies responded to a deadly crash on North Watkins.

Police said the crash happened at about 5:00 Sunday morning.

A sheriff's department spokesperson confirmed 19-year-old David Boyd was driving his 1999 Suburban when he hit a guardrail just north of Fite Road.

"Tthe best we can tell at this point, the Suburban was going north on Fite Road and veered over into the left lane skidded all the way off the roadway and clipped a utility pole," said Steve Shular with Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

The pole snapped in two and landed on Boyd's overturned SUV. He was killed instantly.

Distraught family members made it to the scene before Boyd's body was pulled from the driver's seat. Traffic investigators were already working to determine what went wrong.

"We don't have any evidence at this point that alcohol is related. Those tests will be conducted as they usually are whenever there's a traffic fatality we conduct those tests," added Shular.

But early indications suggest Boyd may have been driving too fast.

"Again, this is another one of those tragic times that it looks like speed is going to be a factor in this crash," said Shular.

Shular said the investigation is ongoing but confirmed that Boyd was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
