Memphis police are investigating the overnight murder of a man in the parking lot of a Memphis bar.

The incident occurred at Cactus Jacks in the 4000 block of Lamar Avenue just after 1:00 a.m.

Police say a security guard and a patron got into a physical altercation.

The security guard, who worked for a company contracted by Cactus Jacks, shot and killed Jason Morin in the parking lot.

The guard is in police custody, but no charges have been filed. Investigators say a criminal investigation is underway to determine his motive.

Darren Grimes of Cactus Jacks said police requested he not go into detail about the incident.

"Somebody out of control - that we know. We feel very bad about what happened," he said.

"We just want people to come out and have a good time. Doesn't always work out that way."

Grimes said he believes the guard acted in self-defense and will not be charged for murder.

Dawn Roberts, the victim's step-sister, disagrees. She says self-defense doesn't explain why Morin was shot in the chest five times.

She says Morin was "doing donuts" in the parking lot, but stopped when when security guards told him to.

"Every time J's here, he always does a few donuts here. When they came out of the bar, that's what they did," she said.

"But somebody called the security guards because they came pulling in front of them. When they stopped him, he got out, put his hands up and said ,'I don't want no problem.'"

Roberts says 36-year-old Morin was a good man, the owner of Morin Tree Service and father of three children.

"His life was for his kids and making a family. That's all he cared about," she said.

Cactus Jacks is no stranger to police activity. A car was driven into the bar last weekend.

Witnesses said the back seat had been set on fire.

No one was injured and no one has been charged in that incident.
