MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The University of Memphis basketball team is headed to Kansas City for the NCAA Tournament later this week.  So how much will it cost you to follow them?

Perhaps the most popular way to get to Kansas City will be by automobile.

"A trip by car the mileage from here to Kansas City is going to be approximately 520 miles," said AAA Division Manager Sandra Smith. "The average time will be 7 hours and 37 minutes."

Gas for the trip will cost the average motorist $150 round trip. If you plan to drive a rental car, get ready to pay an additional $80 per day for every day you rent the vehicle.  Still, Smith believes driving your car will probably be the cheapest way to get to see the Tigers play in the tournament.

"It would definitely be cars, because your airfare is gong to be expensive," she said. "You're not giving it advance notice, so your airfare is going to be pretty expensive."

Indeed, getting to Kansas City by plane will be expensive.  A ticket agent at Northwest Airlines said Monday if you bought your ticket now, it would cost around $830 dollars round trip from Memphis.

A charter flight runs slightly lower - Bartlett Travel is charging $800 for a round trip ticket.

A trip by train would be half that - just $363 on Amtrak.  But if you leave after Tuesday, it's cheaper at around $210.
You can save even more money taking the bus.  Greyhound officials said a round trip bus ticket from Memphis would cost around $180.
