Mid-Southerners using social networking sites to organize outdoor events

MySpace, Facebook, Twitter: The social media scene in Memphis is exploding.

Events in Midtown Memphis this weekend proved that connecting in cyberspace can mean bringing people together for some real-world fun.

On Saturday, Midtown's Overton Park was the scene of the 2009 Memphis Pillow Fight.

Despite the rain earlier in the day, over 100 kids and grownups showed up to partake in some old-fashioned, childlike fun.

The event was the brainchild of University of Memphis alumnae Caroline Allen, who had heard about these large-scale pillow fights in other cities and decided to organize one in Memphis.

Caroline used Facebook to spread the word, inviting just her friends at first. But word spread quickly on Facebook, with lots of folks eager to kick off spring with a massive outdoor pillow fight.

On the same day, the Memphis Zoo held their "Extreme-a-ganza", a day for the zoo's social media friends and followers to visit the zoo for half price, with special prizes announced throughout the day via tweets and text messages. Pillow fighters also received the discounted admission.
