MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - As national powerhouse basketball programs practiced Thursday at FedExForum, Mid-Southerners came to see the action first hand - even if it meant playing hooky.

"I'm missing a little work," fan Trenton Busby said. "Hope the boss isn't watching.  I went to class!"

For many, watching teams like North Carolina practice was worth the risk.

Nevertheless, Busby said he was cheering for the Tar Heels - for now.

"Until they play Memphis, then I'll have to switch," he said.

Tar Heel fan Ellis Knight said he definitely would not be switching his allegiance.

"No place like blue heaven," he said.

Knight is a Memphian, and even spent 28 years coaching basketball at Memphis City Schools.  But before that, he coached in Virginia, a state that sends a lot of players to the Tar Heels.

Despite being a Tar Heels fans since 1965, Knight has never seen them play in  person, until now.

"This is as close as I can get to them," he said.
