MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash is featured in the current issue of 'Time' magazine in an article about a plan meant to Take Back Our Neighborhoods.

The article, "What Public Boarding Schools Teach Us," applauds the Memphis City Schools superintendent for putting a focus on the growing number of students who are homeless, or move a lot.

In the article, Cash talks about the 1,500 homeless students attending Memphis City Schools and the 'public boarding school' he wants to create for them.

"Full residential, 24 hours, 7 days a week, for up to 2 years to give the family a chance to get on their feet again," Cash said.

The article describes Cash's plan as at the forefront of an educational trend that's sweeping this country.  According to the article, Cash hopes a public boarding school can combat illiteracy and other learning problems.

Right now, Cash is seeking grant money to begin the program, starting at the elementary school level.

"These are expensive schools to run operationally, but its also expensive to society to have so many children lose ground simply by the fact that they don't have a steady place to live," Cash said.

The boarding school Cash has in mind would cost three times what the current cost is at a traditional day school.
