MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The list continues to evolve, and is perhaps getting shorter, as the search for the next head basketball coach at the University of Memphis continues.

It all started when Kentucky lost - in the NIT.  Then, Memphis lost in the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16 round.  Days later, Kentucky coach Billy Gillespie was out, and Tiger coach John Calipari ready to move to Lexington.

"It wasn't hard coming here," Calipari said at a press conference Wednesday in Lexington. "This was easy."

When Calipari left for Kentucky, his departure left Memphis with a huge hole to fill. Wednesday at a press conference on campus, athletic director R.C. Johnson said he had an original list of three to five names.

Thursday, Bruce Pearl re-negotiated for a better deal at UT.  Also Thursday, Tim Floyd, who acknowledged he spoke to Memphis by phone, re-signed with USC.

With Baylor's season finally over, Bears coach Scott Drew is reportedly on Memphis' radar.

As for coaches Rick Pitino, Sean Miller, and Andy Kennedy - they may or may not be under consideration.  They may also be able to turn perception into more money elsewhere, as Memphis is not the only program conducting a search.  At the University of Arizona, another storied program is going through the same thing.

The University of Memphis refuses to name names in their search, leaving the rumor mill rolling with one nagging question: who will the next coach be?
