SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - The city of Southaven feels like it is currently prepared for disastrous emergency situations like the deadly tornados in 2008.  But, leaders also want their newest residents to know they are a priority as well.

A recent annexation has added an additional 5.8 square miles to the city, and that means adding three more emergency warning sirens to the existing eleven they currently have.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis said citizen safety is a top priority.

"We do have some new ones were gonna be putting up, but they're in the new annexed areas that will be coming into our city," Davis said. "We want to make sure that they're immediately protected with the early warning sirens that we can get up as quickly as possible."

The newly incorporated area is east and south of the city, and includes the Summerwood and Whitten Place subdivisions.

The additional land should increase Southaven's total population to around 42,000.
