MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - This 78 year-old woman is ecstatic.

"I'm so happy they got him," she says.  "Lord knows I am," she adds.

She's happy fellow septuagenarian Charles Hale is behind bars.  The 70 year-old is accused of using his age to help him con multiple people in Memphis over the last few months.

"He pretended he needed my help," says the victim, who did not want to be identified.

She says Hale approached her in the parking lot of a Family Dollar on Elvis Presley Boulevard.  He needed her to help him read an insurance policy.

"Made like he couldn't read or talk good, you know?" says the victim.

She says she offered Hale a ride to Burger King.  But he stole money from her purse, not to mention her medication, while she was distracted.

"I really wasn't thinking," says the victim.  "I should have came back home," she adds.

Court records contend Charles Hale used the same scam on other victims.  He's accused of  robbing at least two of them outside banks while pretending to have a gun in his pocket.  His crime spree allegedly netted him up to $3000.

No one came to the door where Hale was arrested this week thanks to a Crime-Stoppers tip.  But friends in the neighborhood actually defend him.  They tell Action News 5 that conning people is simply his profession.  They say Hale really means no harm.

"And I just felt sorry for him," says the victim.

She believes Hale must have conned them too.

Charles Hale is being held on a $250,000 bond because he's considered a flight risk.  Police say a man in his 50's served as Hale's accomplice a number of times.  He remains at large.
