MILLINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - Shelby County officials have suspended their search for a man who apparently fell into the Loosahatchie River near Millington, Tennessee.

Just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, a motorist on Raleigh-Millington near Fite Road spotted a man in the river clinging to a tree branch.  The motorist stopped to help, but the man disappeared under the water.

Shelby County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Steve Shular said swift currents made it too dangerous for crews to use boats to search Monday.  Specially trained cadaver dogs walked 500 yards along the riverbank, but found no trace of the man's body.

Shular said deputies searched nearby neighborhoods, but residents said no one was missing.  Furthermore, no reports about a missing fisherman have been reported to the sheriff's department.

"We don't have enough information to continue at this level," Shelby County Fire Department spokesperson Brent Perkins said. "We're still not even 100 percent sure.  There's no one that's called to notify us that anyone has been missing."

The search will resume later this week when the current slows and the water level drops, Perkins said.

"Let us know if you've got someone that's from this area or may have been in this area and we'll come back out here and re-engage." he added.

In the meantime, anyone with information about the missing man should call the Shelby County Sheriff's Department at 901-379-7625.
