Traveling pharmacist helps seniors with medications

Senior Citizens all across West Tennessee now have an easy way to learn more about their medications and how to take them properly.

Seniors at the Fayette County Senior Center got received from a licensed pharmacist Wednesday. During the visit, Doctor Harry Cummings gave a presentation on medical management.

Seniors then took a short quiz about their medications.

Afterwards, Cummings met with seniors individually on the proper way to take their medicines and also advised senior citizens about possible interactions with other drugs they may be taking.

For many seniors, finding less expensive or generic medicines is also very important.

"Patients are certainly in a position where they have to decide which medicine to take verses another, whether to take a medication verses buying this grocery or that grocery," Cummings said.

"Makes me realize I should pay attention to labels on my medication," resident Chester Smith said.

Meritan, formerly Senior Services here in Memphis, sponsors these visits all over West Tennessee.  Every month, a licensed pharmacist visits senior citizens in Fayette, Tipton and Lauderdale counties.
