MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC-TV) - A Memphis firefighter charged with theft remains on the job.

Battalion Chief William Jones, a 20-year veteran with the Memphis Fire Department, is charged with stealing a trailer worth $1500. Police say it was found parked behind Jones' home in Arlington, Tennessee.

Investigators say Jones picked the trailer up near the Loosahatchie River. Jones told police he thought the trailer had been stolen and took it to back to his home with plans to track down its owner.

But Jones never called anyone to let them know he had the trailer, and investigators say he never contacted law enforcement.

"In the state of Tennessee the law doesn't operate under a finders keepers system," said Lt. R.M. Shelby with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

Despite his arrest, Jones is still at work with the fire department. Fire officials said he will remain on the job while they conduct their own investigation.

Jones is set to appear in court Friday.

Nick Kenny will have more on this story later today on Action News 5 and WMCTV.com.
