MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An eyesore is perched at the main entrance of the upcoming Beale Street Music Festival: a heap of dirt from Beale Street Landing boat dock construction.

Monday, Memphis in May's Diane Hampton tried to make light of the situation.

"Regardless of the construction, we want to present a real positive picture of the city," she said.

Hampton said says Memphis in May will turn the lost space into a more intimate experience.

"In all, I think it's going to make for a great customer experience, because the stages are a little closer together," she said.

The construction also means it will take concert-goers a little bit longer to make their way inside to all the action.  But Hampton says not to worry.  Officials plan to cover the mound of dirt, and provide you with a little entertainment as you make your way into the park."

"We're in the process now of covering up some of the dirt pile that's down there from the construction," she said.

With rain in the midweek forecast, the plywood's in place, but organizers hope for clear skies when the music starts.

"While we enter it with a little trepidation, we're looking at the forecast and everything is strong - even the sunshine," Hampton said.

And when the time comes for Barbecue Fest, less space means fewer teams.

"The World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest is always like a family reunion anyway, so it'll just give you more chances to see your cousins," Hampton said.

Memphis in May officials expect solid attendance and heaps of fun.

The main gate is still located at Beale and Riverside.  Hampton wouldn't give away details of the entrance-way entertainment, but said it will have a Memphis touch.
