Bredesen calls potential Herenton/Cohen match-up healthy

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen spoke with Action News 5 exclusively Tuesday about the potential District 9 race between Congressman Steve Cohen and Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton.

The potential race between Cohen and Herenton puts Bredesen, like many democrats, in a tight spot.

"I don't have any more time for this interview today," Bredesen laughed during an interview Tuesday.

Kidding aside, Bredesen thinks it would be healthy for the democratic process for the Memphis Mayor to make the run.

"In a city like Memphis which is so democratic, in a way it's almost the general election here, and I think people ought to have the right, whether it's the Mayor Herenton or anyone else, to offer their thoughts forward," Bredesen said.

Bredesen added the Mayor would have his work cut out for him.

"When you're an incumbent you're in an enormously strong position, no question about that," he said. "But this is America. People get to stand up and run for things, and say things they think are important.  Mayor Herenton has never hesitated to do that."

While incumbency is often an advantage when it comes to the name recognition of a candidate, with the high profile Herenton, it remains to be seen just how much of an advantage incumbency would play in the 9th district, the majority of which is the city of Memphis.

Tune in to Action News 5 at 10pm tonight to see the results of our scientific poll pitting Herenton vs. Cohen.
