MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis director Craig Brewer's latest project, '$5 Cover,' debuts on cable this Friday.

The show features everyone from singer Any LaVere to rapper Al Kapone, living their lives on stage and on the streets of Memphis.

It began as 15 web episodes designed to stream on the internet. But Brewer said MTV producers liked the show so much, they decided to put it on television too.

"These are musicians trying to pay the rent, you know, so it's not like something phony," he said.

'$5 Cover' features as much drama as it does music, with scenes taking viewers from the local roller derby to area clubs in Memphis.
And be sure to watch for the driver in the car egg throwing scene, where Brewer himself makes his first cameo appearance ever in one of his movies.

"I just didn't have it in my heart to go to anybody else and say, 'Okay, we are going to egg your car,' so I brought out my beautiful Mustang and we egged it," he said.

Brewer's use of the internet on this project is considered groundbreaking, and there's already talk of future episodes in other cities and countries.

A big premiere for '$5 Cover' is scheduled for Thursday night at the Malco Paradiso.  For more details on the project, or to watch, click here.
