MY TURN: A culture of entitlement

What a bunch of chumps we've been. I'm talking about us Shelby County residents who were used to waiting a long time to get those car tags renewed. If we had only known that a little tip for the clerk would have gotten us much better service.

Of course, it seems many people did know that trick. A city councilwoman and a local attorney are among those mentioned as receiving special service in exchange for bribes at the Shelby County Clerk's office, but apparently, there were many others.

The district attorney said it seems like bribery was a long standing practice in the clerk's office. Unfortunately, you can't really describe these indictments as surprising.

It reminds me of the memorable line in the movie, Casablanca, when the police captain exclaims that he's "shocked" to find out that gambling is going on in the bar where he himself regularly gambles. I don't think many of us were shocked. One county official said the investigation had uncovered a pervasive culture of entitlement, but really, didn't we know we had that already?

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
