HERNANDO, MS (WMC-TV) - DeSoto County law enforcement officials honored those they've lost in the line of duty at a ceremony Friday.

May is National Law Enforcement Officers month, and Friday in Hernando, members of law enforcement from around the county joined family and friends in a ceremony in front of the Fallen Heroes monument at the DeSoto County courthouse.
Lt. Jerald Wheeler of the Southaven Police Department said it's important that everyone come together to remember.

"You just don't see one police department here, you see all police departments in the county represented here," Wheeler said. "The sheriff's office, our firefighters support us too.

The memorial address was given by current DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco, and one white dove was released each time a slain officers name was called.

Every year at this time, DeSoto County and the fallen hero program awards endowed scholarships to the Northwest Safety Officer program at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

There were eight recipients this year.
