CONWAY, AR (WMC-TV) - An 'American Idol' contestant from the Mid-South returned home to the cheers of thousands of adoring fans Friday.

From Little Rock to Conway, Arkansas, Kris Allen received a hero's welcome Friday. Thousands of fans followed his every move, in a tour scheduled to conclude in Conway's town square.

When Allen made it into 'American Idol's' Top 3 Wednesday night, show runners promised him a trip home.  Friday, he hit the ground running early, making appearances at Little Rock radio stations, singing to fans at an AT&T store, and making a surprise visit to the Governor's mansion

Allen then performed in front of at least 10,000 people at the Riverfest Amphitheater. Many in that crowd were from Allen's home town of Conway.  Allen said all the attention was hard to comprehend.

"A year ago today I was probably trying to figure out what I was going to do with the rest of my life," he said. "I was probably trying to get back in college. I probably was back in college, and yeah, just going back to college and trying to figure out what I wanted to do. And we're about to get married. And yeah, everything has completely changed since then."

Allen, a University of Central Arkansas student majoring in business, says it looks like the music business is in his future no matter how the 'Idol' competition pans out.

Allen performed to a packed house at UCA Friday afternoon.

In a show of pride over their now famous native son, the city of Conway hosted a parade in his honor late Friday afternoon.
