Two killed in I-240 motorcycle accident

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two motorcycle riders were killed in an accident that tied up traffic for hours on Interstate 240 near Norris Road.

Memphis Police say a group of between 20 and 30 motorcycle riders were headed southbound on Interstate 240 around 11P.M. Wednesday night at a high rate of speed.

A female bike rider struck the back of an Oldsmobile and was thrown from her bike.  A male biker who was also a part of the group accidentally ran over her, which caused him to be thrown from his bike as well.

Both of the riders were taken to the Med in extremely critical condition and later died.

There were also two minor accidents due to the traffic backup.

Traffic was at a standstill on Interstate 240 between South Parkway and Norris Road as crews worked to clear the scene.

The 240 southbound lanes reopened around 2A.M.

Sources say the bikers had just come from Beale Street where Wednesdays are Bike Night.

No one was ticketed as a result of the accident, but police continue to investigate.
