Mayor reprimands city director for 'hot rod'

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Estrice Boone, Memphis' Director of General Services, received a written reprimand Thursday from Mayor Willie Herenton concerning his city-assigned vehicle.

Boone said the 2007 Dodge Charger was a wrecked Memphis Police Department car that General Services repaired using parts from other wrecked city vehicles. The car was modified with custom paint, chrome-plated wheels, a scooped hood, dual exhaust and custom emblems.

Boone estimated the car cost approximately $3,400 to repair after it was wrecked. But in an Action News 5 report Wednesday, Thomas Ray of Ray's Auto Collision in Memphis said it likely cost more than Boone's estimate.

"You wouldn't want the boss riding around in the worse car in the fleet," Boone said Tuesday.

But the boss' vehicle has now been returned to the city's fleet.

A press release from Mayor Herenton's office said the reprimand would be placed in Boone's personnel file.

Memphis City Council member Kemp Conrad complained about the car earlier this week during budget talks.

"It's simply an extravagance we cannot afford when we're looking at possible having to increase taxes," he said.

Conrad says the mayor should take city-issued cars away from most city directors. "I applaud the mayor's leadership for making this decision. I hope it doesn't stop here."

Conrad says there are directors who live outside the city driving vehicles paid for by Memphis taxpayers.

Ken Moody, director of public services, and Michael Gray, deputy director of the public library, live out in the county.

"I hope he (Mayor Herenton) starts first with the division director and the deputy director that live out in the county and apparently leave their cars at a fire station at the city line before they drive out to the hinterlands."

There's no word yet on whether the Mayor plans any more reprimands.

Estrice Boone was unavailable for comment Thursday.
